Volunteer Roles
Maintenance Team
Members of our basic Maintenance Team are available to help with the occasional odd job around the 441 properties. When new projects come up, they will receive a text or email and can commit to tasks as they are available. Should be comfortable with some types of simple projects (e.g. plumbing, patching holes, drywall, etc). They should have access to some tools and be able to find required parts at local hardware stores. Leaders for our Maintenance Team should be comfortable receiving projects from 441 staff and reaching out to Maintenance Team members to find volunteers willing to complete the tasks.
Renovation Team
Members of our Renovation Team should have some comfort with significant home improvement skills (e.g. drywall, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc). They don’t have to know everything, but they are willing to learn. They should have access to necessary tools and have an understanding of additional tools for projects. As renovation projects become available, team members commit the time they have available to see a project to completion over the course of a few weeks or months. Leaders for our Renovation Team should be able to assess a project, build a list of required resources, and create a schedule for renovation team volunteers to see the project completed.
Groundskeeping Team
Members of our groundskeeping team should be comfortable with basic landscaping and gardening. They will work together as a team to beautify 441 properties so they bring dignity and encouragement to our community. This may include simple gardening, clean-up, tree/brush pruning, and more. They may occasionally work with larger volunteer teams for larger clean-up projects. Leaders for our Groundskeeping Team will schedule and communicate with volunteers to see that our properties are cared for well.
Project Management
As we discern the needs of the neighborhood and our role in it, we are always launching initiatives or finding new and creative ways to accomplish our mission. We could use a few folks to serve as Project Managers that can provide support to a 441 Staff member in larger ongoing projects or program development. Helping in this way might mean providing administrative oversight, brainstorming help, carrying forward various details and logistics, performing research relevant to the work, etc.
Bike Clinic
441 operates a Bike Clinic one evening a week from Spring to Fall. We repair and replace bikes as needed. Our primary need is for volunteers willing to interact with youth and adults that attend the clinic. It can be difficult for the repair volunteers to focus on both repairing bikes and managing the crowd. We could also use a few individuals comfortable with routine bike repair to help build up our team. Ideally volunteers commit to attend the clinic most weeks through the season. The official day for the Bike Clinic each week for this season is TBD (last year it was Monday evenings from 4 to 7 pm).
Community Garden
441 operates a Community Garden weekly throughout the growing season. The space provides a great place for neighbors to gather, work together, and grow fresh produce for themselves and the community. Work each week might include digging, gardening, weeding, outdoor cleaning, and simple garden bed repair. Ideally volunteers commit to attend a garden work time most weeks of the season to get to know other volunteers and connect deeply. Garden work days are typically every Saturday morning and Tuesday evening.
Development Team
Members of our development team help raise the financial and prayer support necessary for the 441 team to succeed in their mission. They play a variety of roles by crafting newsletters, planning events, writing grants, sharing stories, signing “thank you” cards, and staffing tables at churches and conferences. These behind-the-scenes roles are so critical to our success!
There are a few key roles we are looking for, though any help would be so appreciated:
Event Planner - We are looking for a few folks willing to help coordinate and set up one or two fundraising events a year. These would be ongoing events we’ve hosted before.
Administrative - We need extra hands to handle administrative tasks related to our development team. This might include preparing mailers (stamps, stuffing envelopes, etc) or picking up various supplies for events.
Publications - We need someone willing to help create drafts of newsletters and mass emails. Comfort or willingness to learn Mailchimp and Canva would be ideal.
Social Media - We need someone willing to help develop engaging content for Instagram and Facebook to share stories, events, and opportunities with supporters and neighbors alike.
Mentor Team
We are fortifying and expanding our Cafe mentorship program to provide even more support for our Cafe apprentices and to expand mentorship to other youth in the neighborhood. To accomplish this, we need willing and available adults who can bring their life experiences and time to help young adults and teens employed at New City Cafe succeed. We are looking for people willing to be a Primary Mentor for someone, others willing to help as part of a mentor team in the role of Support Mentor, and those with significant mentorship experience to help train, equip, and develop other mentors as a Mentor Trainer.
Teen Outreach
To meet the growing need for support for teenagers, we are launching a full teen outreach program. Our goal isn’t to reinvent the wheel, but to connect the many available resources in our city directly to the teens and their families in Beechwood. To launch this well, we need a variety of leaders serving in many ways. We need Mentors willing to build positive relationships with neighborhood teens and provide support, Group Leaders willing to coordinate ongoing gatherings for relationships to form, Tutors/Helpers willing to assist teens after school, and Program Assistants willing to help with coordination and administrative tasks.
